The Los Angeles Angels won't waste any time getting their prized offseason acquisition on a major-league mound.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia told reporters Thursday that Shohei Ohtani will make his first start of the spring Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The 23-year-old is attempting to be a two-way star in the majors after achieving much success in Japan. The Angels plan to use him as a starter and designated hitter this season, though Scioscia said he will only be available to hit on non-pitching days and not on the day before, or after, he starts. Under this schedule, Ohtani would be eligible to make his first appearance as DH on Monday.

Ohtani is in camp as a non-roster invitee after agreeing to a minor-league deal with the club in December. While he's not currently on the 40-man roster, he's fully expected to make the Opening Day roster and serve as a key cog in the rotation.
