The Tampa Bay Rays' most prized pitching prospect suffered a potentially serious injury on the eve of the spring training schedule.

Right-hander Brent Honeywell - the No. 12 prospect in the majors - was diagnosed with right forearm tightness after his pitching session was cut short Thursday morning. The 22-year-old only threw 8-to-10 pitches and cursed loudly following his last throw before departing with training staff.

"Obviously it's unfortunate," Rays manager Kevin Cash said, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. "We'll let the doctors and trainers get a look at him."

Honeywell entered camp with a shot at cracking the rotation following the trade of Jake Odorizzi last weekend. He went 13-9 with a 3.49 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and 172 strikeouts in 136 2/3 innings split between Double- and Triple-A last season.

The injury serves as more bad news for Rays fans, who not only watched Odorizzi get dealt, but also recently saw the club trade away outfielder Steven Souza Jr., and designate Corey Dickerson for assignment.
