Phillies' Williams hit manager's car with HR Tuesday, just missed it Wednesday

Here's hoping new Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler bought some insurance when he rented his car for spring training, because Nick Williams is going to destroy it before camp is done.

Williams, who's slated to be the Phillies' Opening Day right fielder, has flashed his potential as a power hitter during batting practice at Mike Schmidt Field early in spring training. Unfortunately, his skipper's been the victim of that power. On Tuesday, the 24-year-old launched a 430-foot homer that left the spring ballpark and smashed right into Kapler's rental vehicle, which was parked behind the outfield fence.

Luckily for Williams, the skipper seemed unperturbed by the whole thing.

“I would trade a Nick Williams home run for a dent in a rental car, any day of the week," Kapler said Tuesday, according to Philly.com's Matt Breen.

So of course Kapler didn't learn his lesson right away. On Wednesday, Kapler parked in the same spot, and Williams crushed another baseball to the same area, barely avoiding hitting the rental car for the second day in a row.

Not only has the near-miss failed to persuade Kapler to move the vehicle, but the 42-year-old manager quipped that the car could encourage Williams to exceed the 12 homers he hit in the majors last season.

"We're going to make it a bull's-eye for him," Kapler said Wednesday, according to Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia. "That'll be a running joke. It's a great way to build relationships. It's part of the whole scientific plan to make this work."

Motivational tactics aside, Kapler should take away at least one lesson from this experience: When the Phillies visit Fenway Park this coming July, he'd be wise not to park his ride behind the Green Monster, or Williams is bound to get him again.
