The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) will apparently meet with Manchester City after the club requested it reconsiders retrospective action for players who perform dangerous tackles, but who were already dealt with by the match referee.

Tackles on City players within the last two months by Crystal Palace's Jason Puncheon, Cardiff City's Joe Bennett, and West Bromwich Albion's James McClean were all met with yellow cards, but manager Pep Guardiola was incensed after each endangered his playing staff. Bennett's studs-up challenge on Leroy Sane resulted in a three-match layoff for the German.

Guardiola was backed up by his employer, according to the Guardian's Jamie Jackson, who requested a meeting with the PGMOL. The gathering is expected to occur next month, but it is believed the club's suggestion to retrospectively increase punishments for dangerous challenges will not be entertained by the collective.

The PGMOL is expected to recite lines from the rulebook to Guardiola and his backroom team, offering the considerations that referees take when deciding if a tackle merits a red card. These include the point of contact and how forceful the aggressor is, as explained by Jackson.

"I said many times the only thing (referees) have to do is protect the players," Guardiola said in the wake of his side's FA Cup defeat of Cardiff and Bennett's controversial lunge on Sane.

"For football in general, and for the players who are the artists, they must do that. That's why we are all here."
