Report: Adidas pays members of Rose's entourage as part of contract

Just six years ago, Derrick Rose was one of the brightest stars in the NBA universe. The then-reigning league MVP and attack-first point guard for his hometown Chicago Bulls was rewarded with a reported 14-year, $185-million endorsement contract from Adidas in 2012.

Injuries changed all that, but Rose's deal with the apparel giant remains.

According to Sports Illustrated's Jon Wertheim, provisions in the contract include annual payments of between $250,000 and $300,000 to Rose's brother Reggie as a consultant, as well as $50,000-$75,000 a year to his friend Randall Hampton. In addition, Rose can nullify deductions to his earnings for not being named an All-Star by making promotional appearances.

Rose was last an All-Star in 2012, and hasn't played in more than 66 games since 2010-11. The Cleveland Cavaliers now pay him the NBA veteran's minimum of $2.1 million.

At first glance, Rose's Adidas deal is an albatross for the German multinational. He's no longer a star, and he's only played 14 games this season. However, Adidas chose not to take an escape route when Rose and two associates - including Hampton - were accused of rape in 2015 (they were later cleared in a civil trial and never charged criminally). According to Wertheim, the contract contains a morals clause, but Adidas did not exercise it.
