3 more moves Toronto FC can make to get even better in 2018

Toronto FC enjoyed the single greatest season in MLS history last year and is poised to reach new heights in 2018, as the Canadian club hopes its dominant brand of football can also bring CONCACAF Champions League glory.

To that end, the Reds upgraded their right flank on Thursday with the signing of Dutch full-back Gregory van der Wiel, but can this team get even scarier with a few more additions?

Here are three moves Toronto FC can make to grow even mightier in 2018:

Bolster the middle with TAM funds

Marky Delgado is a great link-up player, but with pockets full of Targeted Allocation Money and a need for depth in each of the three midfield positions, one must imagine general manager Tim Bezbatchenko and president Bill Manning have identified a few starting-quality options in Delgado's position.

It is the sad reality of sports that local favourites such as Jonathan Osorio eventually lose their spots to newcomers like Victor Vazquez, but as Toronto FC showed last year, those moves are to the net benefit of the team. The Reds will first have to add depth in the middle after losing midfielders Benoit Cheyrou and Armando Cooper, but sliding another star man into the mix won't hurt.

To that point, Toronto FC has been linked with a $4.5-million move for Alexis Mac Allister of Argentinos Juniors - a versatile midfielder who would compete for a starting role between Vazquez and Michael Bradley. Even if that deal doesn't come to fruition, it's the right kind of thinking from the Toronto brass.

Add another contender at centre-back

Should head coach Greg Vanney return to his tried-and-true 3-5-2 formation in 2018, Toronto FC would be wise to add a fifth starting contender at centre-back, especially since the beginning of the season will feature a more congested schedule with the addition of Champions League fixtures.

At the moment, the Reds can count Drew Moor, Chris Mavinga, Nick Hagglund, and Eriq Zavaleta as starting options, but leaving just one substitute for a back-three isn't ideal, especially when tired legs start giving out. Toronto FC was quite lucky to avoid serious injuries to its defensive ranks last season, and when injuries did strike, Hagglund filled in admirably. But a second bench option would help alleviate some of Vanney's selection stresses.

Of course, finding adequate depth across the park in a salary-cap league is a challenge for any team, let alone a team such as Toronto FC that employs three Designated Players on its roster. Addressing this need now might prevent avoidable problems down the line, though.

Find valuable continental experience

Repeating their triumphs in the MLS Cup and the Supporters' Shield race will be a high priority for Greg Vanney's men, but the foray into Champions League football promises the chance for Toronto FC to achieve even greater heights. After all, no MLS team has won CONCACAF's continental club competition - a challenge Bradley, Jozy Altidore, Sebastian Giovinco and Co. will relish.

While the aforementioned U.S. internationals have plenty of experience playing in CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers, the Atomic Ant is entering new territory, as is much of Toronto FC's roster.

Finding a player who has experience playing in this region could help lead the team through some of the obstacles that come with CONCACAF football - hostile fans, weary travel times, tough accommodations, poor field conditions, and less-than-honourable playing styles - while offering Vanney another veteran presence to turn to when those often cagey matches have his team struggling to create spaces or chances.
