Liga MX's Club Leon signs former Orlando City forward Giles Barnes

Logan Bowles-USA TODAY Sports

Jamaica international Giles Barnes is swapping tourist hub Orlando and the comforts of Major League Soccer for the epicentre of Mexican leather production.

Liga MX side Club Leon announced Tuesday it signed the 29-year-old England-born Reggae Boyz regular whose contract had expired at Orlando City, unveiling the player with a statement on Twitter and a mural. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

A Derby County academy product who enjoyed spells in England with the Rams, Fulham, and West Brom, Barnes signed in MLS with the Houston Dynamo in 2012. The Barking-born forward would go on to make 157 league appearances for Houston, the Vancouver Whitecaps, and Orlando, which he joined as part of a swap that sent Brek Shea the other way.

Barnes was made a Designated Player at Orlando after the club waived Bryan Rochez in March 2017.
