The Detroit Red Wings signed defenseman Travis Hamonic to a one-year contract worth $1 million, the team announced Friday.

Hamonic, who turns 35 on Saturday, tallied one goal and seven points in 59 games last season with the Ottawa Senators. He averaged 17:04 and was a team-worst minus-16. Hamonic didn't play in the Senators' first-round series versus the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Detroit has eight defensemen on its projected NHL roster after bringing in Hamonic. He's the second blue-liner the Red Wings have added this offseason after signing Jacob Bernard-Docker on July 1.

Hamonic has totaled 53 goals and 242 points in 900 games over 15 seasons with the New York Islanders, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks, and Senators.

The Red Wings have $11 million of cap space after signing Hamonic.
