The Minnesota Twins traded utility player Willi Castro to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for right-handed pitching prospects Ryan Gallagher and Sam Armstrong, they announced.

Castro had been with the Twins since 2023. The 28-year-old, who regularly plays four positions, hit .250/.335/.398 with 31 homers and 56 stolen bases in 368 games for Minnesota.

Castro was named to his first All-Star Game in 2024.

The Cubs sit second in the National League with a 63-45 record.

The Twins shed several assets before Thursday's trade deadline. The team also shipped shortstop Carlos Correa to the Houston Astros, left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe to the Texas Rangers, right-hander Brock Stewart to the Los Angeles Dodgers, outfielder Harrison Bader and reliever Jhoan Duran to the Philadelphia Phillies, and starting pitcher Chris Paddack to the Detroit Tigers, among others.

Gallagher was ranked as the Cubs' No. 8 prospect before the trade by MLB.com.
