NFL playoff seeding to remain unchanged for 2025

The Detroit Lions withdrew their proposal to rework playoff seeding due to a lack of support from league owners, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The proposal originally would've seeded playoff teams by their regular-season records regardless of their division. This would give teams that didn't win their division a chance to host a playoff game if they had one of the three best records in the conference behind the No. 1 seed.

The final proposal was altered to only change seeding after the wild-card round, ensuring that division winners would still host postseason contests.

NFL executive Troy Vincent asked the Lions to submit the original proposal, team president Rod Wood said in April, per Pride of Detroit's Jeremy Reisman.

The league's owners reportedly discussed the proposal at Wednesday's meeting with some support for the idea despite the withdrawal, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Judy Battista. The NFL is expected to revisit similar proposals in the future.
