The Miami Marlins agreed to void a 2025 team option on manager Skip Schumaker's contract this past winter to appease the skipper, sources told the Miami Herald's Jordan McPherson, Barry Jackson, and Craig Mish.

Schumaker was upset following the departure of general manager Kim Ng, who hired him to be Marlins manager. He had a good relationship with her before she departed last October, and he expressed his concerns about the front-office change with owner Bruce Sherman.

Ng left the Marlins after three seasons as GM, which included a 2023 playoff appearance. The team had exercised an option to bring her back in the same role for 2024, but she declined to return after learning Miami wanted to hire a president of baseball operations that would leave her second in command.

Miami then voided Schumaker's option to allow him to pursue other managerial options following the 2024 campaign, which he is expected to do.

The Marlins eventually hired former Tampa Bay Rays executive Peter Bendix as president of baseball operations. Schumaker reportedly has no issues with Bendix but remains displeased with Ng's departure.

Last season, in his first campaign as a big-league manager, Schumaker helped lead the Marlins to the playoffs. He was subsequently named NL Manager of the Year.

Miami is off to a terrible start to begin the 2024 campaign, losing 10 of its first 11 games.
