Lewis Hamilton was set to appear in one of this year's biggest blockbusters but ultimately had to pass on the opportunity due to his Formula 1 obligations.

In an interview with Chris Heath of Vanity Fair, Hamilton revealed he was offered the role of one of the fighter pilots in "Top Gun: Maverick." Hamilton is friends with "Top Gun" star Tom Cruise and said he approached the actor about playing a role in the sequel.

"When I heard the second one was coming out, I was like, 'Oh, my God, I have to ask him,'" Hamilton said. "I don't care what role it is. I'll even sweep something, be a cleaner in the back."

However, with filming taking place during the climax of the Formula 1 season, Hamilton realized he wouldn't be able to do both. He said contacting Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski to turn down the role was "the most upsetting call that I think I've ever had."

"Top Gun: Maverick" recently passed "Titanic" to become the seventh-highest grossing film of all time at the domestic box office, earning over $662 million.
