A couple of Chicago Cubs stalwarts are staying put.

The Cubs did not trade IF/OF Ian Happ or catcher Willson Contreras at the trade deadline, a source told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

Happ and Contreras were two of the top trade chips on the market and were connected to a number of teams in the buildup to the deadline.

Contreras took to Instagram to express his happiness at remaining with the club.

The two players are in Chicago's lineup for Tuesday's game with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said that interested clubs didn't show the same level of aggression toward Happ and Contreras compared to last year when the team dealt Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, and Anthony Rizzo at the deadline.

Contreras is in the middle of another strong season for the Cubs. The 30-year-old was named an All-Star for the third time in his career and owns a .818 OPS with 14 home runs and 38 RBIs in 86 games this season. Contreras is scheduled to hit free agency following the season.

Happ is slashing .279/.360/.436 with nine home runs and 46 RBIs in 99 games this season. The 27-year-old is scheduled for one more year of salary arbitration before reaching free agency following the 2023 campaign.
