Kerr shares what Popovich texted him, Udoka before NBA Finals
There are no favorites for San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich in this year's NBA Finals.
Popovich has ties to both Finals teams, as Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr played for him for several seasons in San Antonio, and Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka was on his staff from 2012-19. Celtics assistant coach Will Hardy also previously served as a video coordinator and assistant for the Spurs.
During an appearance on 95.7 The Game on Tuesday, Kerr said Popovich texted the three before Game 1 to let them know he was remaining impartial.
"Pop texted all of us before the series started and said, 'I am now neutral. I'll be rooting for everybody,'" Kerr said. "I know he'll be thrilled for whoever wins and despondent for whoever loses. That's genuine Pop, for sure."
The Warriors hold a 3-2 lead over the Celtics and will have the opportunity to clinch the title Thursday in Boston.
