The New York Yankees signed three-time All-Star infielder Matt Carpenter to a major-league contract Thursday.

Carpenter has spent his entire 11-year MLB career with the St. Louis Cardinals, earning three All-Star appearances but none since 2016. He signed a minor-league deal with the Texas Rangers in March and the club released him last week after he hit .275/.379/.613 with six home runs in 21 games in Triple-A.

The 36-year-old left-handed hitter appeared at first, second, and third base last season for the Cardinals. He slashed .176/.313/.291 with seven homers, 17 doubles, and 125 strikeouts in 180 games from 2020-21.

Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson is currently on the COVID IL, while Giancarlo Stanton is sidelined with an ankle injury.
