2021-22 NBA scoring leader odds: Don't count out Durant as long shot
The list of players who have won the NBA scoring title has been a short one over the past few decades, with just 13 different hoopers winning it since 1986-87 and just five earning the honor over the last 12 seasons.
If there was ever a year for a new name atop that list, it's this one. Stephen Curry, who led the NBA in points per game (32.0) in 2020-21, will have to split the scoring load with Klay Thompson again, while recent champions James Harden, Russell Westbrook, and Kevin Durant are all sharing the rock with a fellow star scorer.
Here are the odds (100-1 or shorter) to lead the NBA in scoring average in 2021-22 and our favorite early values:
PLAYER | ODDS |
---|---|
Bradley Beal | +275 |
Luka Doncic | +425 |
Stephen Curry | +600 |
Damian Lillard | +675 |
Joel Embiid | +750 |
Giannis Antetokounmpo | +1000 |
Zion Williamson | +1000 |
Jayson Tatum | +1000 |
Trae Young | +2500 |
Zach LaVine | +2500 |
Donovan Mitchell | +3000 |
Kevin Durant | +3000 |
Devin Booker | +3500 |
Anthony Davis | +4000 |
Collin Sexton | +4000 |
Kyrie Irving | +4500 |
Paul George | +5000 |
James Harden | +6000 |
De'Aaron Fox | +6000 |
LeBron James | +8000 |
Karl-Anthony Towns | +10000 |
Nikola Jokic | +10000 |
Jaylen Brown | +10000 |
Russell Westbrook | +10000 |
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | +10000 |
Michael Porter Jr. | +10000 |
Damian Lillard (+675)
Lillard has been knocking on the door of this crown for years now, and this could finally be the season he takes it. The Blazers star finished third in scoring in 2019-20 (30.0 PPG) and 2020-21 (28.8) and has ranked no worse than ninth since 2015-16, averaging a remarkable 27.2 points over those six seasons.
With rumors swirling about Portland potentially dealing backcourt mate CJ McCollum, this could be the year Lillard asserts himself as the league's premier scorer. Even if McCollum stays, Lillard is in the spotlight after looking for a change this offseason and could finally unleash his full scoring potential.
Kevin Durant (+3000)
Are we sure Durant isn't worth betting in this market? Yes, I know I dismissed him in the intro because of his star teammates, but this price severely discounts Durant's ability.
The four-time scoring champion finished second in PPG (34.3) in the postseason despite playing all 12 games alongside one of Harden or Kyrie Irving and six of 12 with both of them. And if he'd have played enough games to qualify, the Nets star would have ranked 10th in scoring (26.9) in the regular season.
Durant is also outpacing his teammates by almost five points per game as Team USA's leading scorer in the Olympics. He's the best scorer in the world, and he's easily worth betting to win his fifth scoring title.
Paul George (+5000)
If you think George can't score at an elite enough level to lead the league, just look back to the 2018-19 season, when he finished second in PPG (28.0) with the Thunder despite playing next to arguably the most ball-dominant teammate in the league.
George's usage rates and shooting efficiency have actually both gone up since that near-MVP season, but his overall shot attempts have dipped while sharing the load with Kawhi Leonard, who is likely to miss most if not all of the season as he rehabs an ACL injury. George is intriguing at any price, but as a 50-1 long shot, he's a strong bet to regain his elite scoring form as the Clippers' top option.
