The Dallas Cowboys plan to start Garrett Gilbert at quarterback in Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, sources told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Cooper Rush will reportedly operate as Gilbert's backup after rookie Ben DiNucci made his first career start last week.

Rush and Garrett split first-team practice reps ahead of Week 9, but the rotation favored the latter as the week progressed, according to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy was expected to make a change at quarterback after DiNucci struggled against the Philadelphia Eagles. Team owner Jerry Jones said afterward that a short-notice start was too much for the rookie to handle.

Gilbert has yet to start an NFL game since entering the league in 2014 as the then-St. Louis Rams' sixth-round pick. He joined the Orlando Apollos of the AAF last year after spending time on multiple practice squads and two seasons with the Carolina Panthers. The 29-year-old was the Cleveland Browns' third-string quarterback in 2019.

Andy Dalton remains on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
