UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov's father and coach, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, has woken up from a coma in a Moscow hospital, according to Russian media outlet RT.

Reports surfaced Wednesday that Abdulmanap entered a coma and was in critical condition. The 57-year-old reportedly regained consciousness Thursday after undergoing heart surgery, with doctors describing his condition as "serious but stable." He has not yet spoken since waking up from the coma.

Abdulmanap was initially hospitalized in late April in Dagestan due to suspected pneumonia, according to reports. He was transferred to the country's capital last week.

UFC president Dana White released a statement Wednesday evening acknowledging the trainer's condition.

"I know how close Khabib is with his father and I'm saddened to hear about his current state," White wrote. "My thoughts are with Abdulmanap and the Nurmagomedov family as he continues to fight."

Abdulmanap has coached Khabib for the majority of his son's career. Khabib is the No. 2 pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC and has never lost as a professional. After capturing the promotion's 155-pound title in 2018, he's defended it twice, most recently against Dustin Poirier in September.

Khabib is expected to fight interim champion Justin Gaethje in a title unification bout later this year.
