White 'not very' confident Khabib-Ferguson will happen in 2020
UFC president Dana White isn't banking on a lightweight title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson happening this year.
"Not very," White wrote during a Reddit "AMA" on Wednesday when asked how confident he was that Nurmagomedov would fight Ferguson at some point in 2020.
Nurmagomedov-Ferguson has become one of the most anticipated bouts in UFC history due to both fighters' extensive winning streaks. Nurmagomedov, the current 155-pound champion, is undefeated at 28-0, while "El Cucuy" has won 12 straight fights.
They've been scheduled to square off five times in the past, but the bout has been canceled each time for various reasons.
The two were most recently slated to meet at UFC 249 on April 18, but the coronavirus pandemic uprooted the event. Nurmagomedov traveled home to Russia and couldn't return to the U.S. because of travel restrictions amid the public health crisis, forcing him out of the clash.
Justin Gaethje filled in for Nurmagomedov and was scheduled to fight Ferguson for the interim belt, but the entire event was eventually postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Ferguson and Gaethje are now expected to meet on May 9.
White said last week he expects Nurmagomedov, who is observing Ramadan from April 23 to May 23, will return to the cage in September or October. The UFC president has already confirmed the winner of Ferguson-Gaethje will take on the Russian for the undisputed title.
