USC parts ways with DC Pendergast

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

USC defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast and special teams coach John Baxter won't return in 2020, the school announced on Saturday.

The move comes a day after the Trojans surrendered 49 points to Iowa in a Holiday Bowl loss. USC finished its campaign ranked 77th in total defense, giving up 408.7 yards per game.

"I want to thank coach Pendergast and coach Baxter for their dedicated service and efforts," said head coach Clay Helton. "However, in evaluating our team's performance this year and after consulting with AD Mike Bohn, it is evident that these changes are necessary."

Pendergast has spent five years with the Trojans, including the last four following a brief stint with the San Francisco 49ers.

USC went 8-5 in 2019, and the team has posted a 13-12 record over the last two years.

The Trojans previously committed to bringing back Helton in 2020 despite cries from their fan base to replace him.
