Hole-by-hole report from Tiger's 3rd-round 78 at the Masters

It likely wasn't the day Tiger Woods hoped for, but watching the five-time champion tee it up on the weekend at the Masters was still remarkable.

Woods battled an ice-cold putter in trying conditions, making six bogeys and two double-bogeys en route to a 6-over 78. That sets a new mark for his worst score in 93 career rounds at Augusta National.

Regardless of the final tally, it's an incredible achievement that the 15-time major winner made the cut after his horrific car accident and a 508-day absence from competing.

Here's how Woods' third round went down at Augusta.

First nine

No. 1

Any concerns over how Woods could swing in the chilly temperatures could be put to rest as he split the fairway at No. 1 for the first time this week. The approach once again created some issues as his flared iron to the right barely hung on the green, leaving him 51 feet for birdie. A below-average putt left him with 9 feet for par, and for the second day in a row, he couldn't convert and settled for bogey. Score through 1: 1-over (+2 overall)

No. 2

A little anger from the bogey on No. 1 appears to have made its way to the second tee as Woods absolutely roasted his drive a whopping 364 yards on the par 5. His second shot came up short in the greenside bunker, but Woods showed off his brilliant short game with an excellent shot that burned the edge of the cup on the way by. He would make the ensuing birdie to cancel out the bogey on the opener. Score through 2: Even (+1 overall)

The first signs of discomfort for Woods on Saturday came after his tee ball on the third hole. His drive skirted a bunker and luckily ended up in a decent position for his approach. Woods grimaced while leaving the tee box but appeared to recover by the time he struck a wedge that left just over 30 feet for birdie. A comfortable two-putt sent him to the difficult fourth at even. Score through 3: Even (+1 overall)

No. 4

At over 240 yards, the par-3 fourth will certainly be among the toughest holes Saturday at Augusta. Woods opted for a 5-wood that got hung up in the wind and came to rest on the other side of the greenside bunker. The 46-year-old was unbothered by the difficult pitch, getting it to skip up to the hole and stop just beside the pin for a comfortable par. Score through 4: Even (+1 overall)

No. 5

Another huge drive from Woods left him with just over 200 yards to the longest par 4 on the first nine. The approach certainly wasn't up to his own lofty standards, leaving over 65 feet on the tricky green. His first putt would leave a testy 6-footer for par, and the ensuing scene would be very unlike Woods. After burning the edge for par, he somehow missed the 2-foot comebacker to card a double-bogey 6. It's just the second four-putt ever for Woods at Augusta. Score through 5: 2-over (+3 overall)

No. 6

The anger from the previous hole followed Woods to the sixth tee, as the 15-time major champion was not pleased after his tee shot found the bunker. He quickly erased that from his mind with a brilliant bunker shot to a foot out to save par on the par 3. Score through 6: 2-over (+3 overall)

No. 7

If Woods' body is hurting, it's certainly not showing in the way he's driving the ball. Another absolute bomb down the center of the fairway set him up with a wedge to the par 4. But a shocking approach didn't even make the bunker in front of the green, coming up a whopping 20 yards short. Woods showed off his short game yet again, pitching up to 5 feet and making the putt for par. Score through 7: 3-over (+3 overall)

No. 8

Woods' worst drive of the day ended up in the fairway bunker, eliminating any chance of reaching the par 5 in two. After laying up to 145 yards, he found the green with just over 25 feet for birdie. The putt came close, but Woods had to settle for another par. Score through 8: 2-over (+3 overall)

No. 9

Woods pounded one around the dogleg off the tee, getting it all the way down the hill to set up a short approach to the uphill green. His iron flew over the flag and skipped to the back fringe, setting up a treacherous putt down one of the largest slopes at Augusta National. He lagged it to 6 feet but couldn't make the par, settling for his second straight 3-over 39 on the opening nine. Score through 9: 3-over (+4 overall)

Second nine

No. 10

The 10th and 11th are arguably the hardest back-to-back holes at Augusta National, but Woods began with a strong tee shot to the edge of the fairway. A day after putting his approach to 2 feet for a tap-in birdie, Woods hit another strong approach from 200-plus yards to leave him 30 feet from the cup. A comfortable two-putt sends him to the 11th tee after a par. Score through 10: 3-over (+4 overall)

No. 11

A stress-free par is what every golfer strives for at the 520-yard par-4 11th, and that's exactly what Woods was eyeing Saturday. A booming drive left him 200 yards to the green, and a towering long-iron came up just short of the putting surface. His chip would leave him 5 feet for par, but the putter let him down once again as he burned the edge and settled for bogey. Score through 11: 4-over (+5 overall)

No. 12

The most famous par 3 in the world provided a great scene for a vintage Tiger moment. After a crisp iron found the green just right of the flag, Woods curled home the 14-footer for his ninth career birdie in 93 rounds at the iconic hole. Score through 12: 3-over (+4 overall)

No. 13

As has been the case throughout the tournament this year, Woods followed up a birdie with another positive hole, smashing his drive on No. 13 to give him a shot at getting home in two. An absolutely towering 5-wood just cleared the creek in front of the green and landed softly to rest 27 feet from the hole. His eagle wouldn't drop, but a second straight birdie saw him move to 2-over on his round. Score through 13: 2-over (+3 overall)

No. 14

A poor drive down the left side saw Woods blocked out from the green by a number of low-hanging tree limbs. After punching a low approach through the green, Woods played a deft chip to a couple of feet and made the par to stay 2-under over his last three holes. Score through 14: 2-over (+3 overall)

No. 15

With the wind blowing into the players at the 15th, there aren't many able to take a shot at getting home in two. Woods smartly played it as a three-shot par 5, finding the fairway off the tee and laying back in the fairway for a full wedge to the tricky green. A crafty shot left him 13 feet for his third birdie in the last four holes. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be as he left the putt out to the right and settled for par. Score through 15: 2-over (+3 overall)

No. 16

A tricky pin position on the right side of No. 16 proved to be a challenge for Woods, as his approach landed in the front of the green and spun back some 50 feet from the hole. He would leave his uphill putt well short and blow his par attempt past the cup to post a bogey. Score through 16: 3-over (+4 overall)

No. 17

Woods blasted yet another solid drive down the fairway to give him 162 yards to the flag on the penultimate hole at Augusta National. In a repeat of the 16th hole, his approach fell woefully short, leaving 65 feet for birdie. Another poor putt left him well outside 15 feet for par, and he couldn't avoid a second straight bogey. In addition to his shocking four-putt on the 5th hole, Woods' three-putt on No. 17 was his fifth of the day. Score through 17: 4-over (+5 overall)

No. 18

Another strong swing with the driver sent the ball up the left side of the fairway, but Woods' approach play again let him down. After short-siding himself to the left of the green, Woods' chip raced past the hole to leave him 52 feet for par. He three-putted again to post a 6-over 78, his worst career score at Augusta. Score through 18: 6-over (+7 overall)
