Emiliano Grillo fired an 8-under 63 in Round 2 of the Mayakoba Golf Classic to lead by four strokes as darkness halted play on Friday.

The 28-year-old Argentine's nine-birdie performance built him a comfy advantage over Tony Finau and Tom Hoge heading into the weekend. Grillo is looking to win for the first time since claiming the Frys.com Open during his Rookie of the Year season in 2015.

Finau is also searching for his first victory since 2015 and rode a hot putter in Day 2 to give himself a chance of breaking his winless drought.

"I learned this game doesn't owe you anything, you've got to earn everything you have, earn all your wins," Finau said after his second-round 66. "It's been a long time coming I feel like for No. 2. Hopefully, it happens here in a couple days."

Here's how the top of the leaderboard looks heading into the weekend:

Place Player To Par R2 Score
1 Emiliano Grillo -13 63
T2 Tom Hoge -9 67
T2 Tony Finau -9 66
4 Russell Knox -8 69
T5 Joel Dahmen -7 67
T5 Aaron Wise -7 68
T5 Kyle Stanley -7 67
T5 Andy Ogletree -7 Thru 15

Andy Ogletree is making the most of his first start as a professional. The low amateur at the Masters is only five shots off the pace with three holes remaining in his second round.

Justin Thomas jumped inside the cutline with a 67 on Friday. However, he bogeyed his final two holes to slip back into a share of 34th at 3-under for the week.

Rickie Fowler, who's in danger of falling outside the top 50 in the world rankings and, as a result, failing to secure a 2021 Masters invite, played his final six holes at 2-over and will miss the 1-under cut by one shot.

Joining Fowler on an early flight home from Mexico are notables Brooks Koepka, Gary Woodland, and Marc Leishman.

Round 2 will resume at 8 a.m. ET on Saturday.
