Morikawa torched Muirfield Village with his best ball-striking performance of his young career. He gained 1.6 strokes off the tee and another 3.6 strokes through approach shots on top of a solid day on the greens. His best shot of the day came from 245 yards on the par-5 fifth, which he put to three feet before rolling in the eagle putt.
"It was a really solid day," Morikawa said. "Got off to a good start with a lot of pars but I was hitting them pretty close, hitting my iron shots good, tee shots felt great, and I knew if I just kept that going I was going to make some birdies."
The 23-year-old is coming off the first missed cut of his professional career at the Travelers Championship. He lost in a playoff to Daniel Berger at the Charles Schwab Challenge, which was the PGA Tour's first event back after a three-month shutdown.
Hadwin held the clubhouse lead early Thursday. After an opening-hole bogey, the Canadian rattled off seven birdies for his eighth consecutive round in the 60s on the PGA Tour. He finished in a tie for fourth at last week's Rocket Mortgage Classic.
