Dustin Johnson to skip 2020 Olympics, focus on FedEx Cup Playoffs

World No. 5 Dustin Johnson will not compete at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, his manager confirmed to Eamon Lynch of Golfweek.

David Winkle said the 35-year-old Johnson plans to focus on the FedEx Cup Playoffs instead of competing for a gold medal in July.

"Dustin gave the Olympics a great deal of thought and we discussed the pros and cons of him participating at length," Winkle wrote in an email. "At the end of the day, it's a matter of personal preference and priority. As much as he would be honored to be an Olympian, the FedEx Cup Playoffs are also very important to him."

Four Americans will qualify for the 2020 Olympics based on the Official World Golf Ranking as of June 22, 2020. Johnson currently occupies the third U.S. spot behind Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas, who rank third and fourth in the world, respectively.

The first round of the Olympics golf competition will begin July 30 at Kasumigaseki Golf Club. The first FedEx Cup Playoffs event is scheduled to start 11 days after the 2020 Games end.
