Justin Thomas birdied the third playoff hole to win the Tournament of Champions over Patrick Reed on Sunday for his second victory of the 2019-20 season.

Defending champion Xander Schauffele was also in the playoff but was eliminated after making par on the first extra hole.

While victorious in the end, Thomas' second career Tournament of Champions title did not come easy. He took the lead away from Schauffele early on the back nine and extended it to two with only three holes remaining. After a bogey on No. 16, Thomas entered the final hole with a one-shot lead, where disaster struck.

Standing 345 yards out, Thomas hooked his layup effort into the penalty area. Meanwhile, Schauffele - who was one back and tied with Reed at 14-under - was looking at a putt for eagle.

Thomas was forced to take a drop and eventually bogeyed to fall into a three-way tie for first. Schauffele hammered his eagle putt by the hole and missed the comebacker to set up the three-man playoff.

Thomas managed to seal the deal on the third extra hole after a nifty approach put him within tap-in range, which he made after Reed's missed birdie attempt.

Thomas' victory marks the 12th of his PGA Tour career. All of Thomas' career wins came within the last five years, the most of anyone on Tour over that span.

Here's how the leaderboard finished in Maui:

T2 Xander Schauffele -14 70
4 Patrick Cantlay -11 68
