Robby Shelton fires 62 to grab 2-shot lead at Greenbrier

Robby Shelton carded an 8-under 62 in Round 1 of the season opener to grab a two-shot lead at A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier on Thursday.

It didn't take long for the 24-year-old to find his name at the top of a PGA Tour leaderboard. Shelton's back-nine 29 at The Old White TPC course propelled him into the lead in his first start as a full-time Tour member.

The former University of Alabama standout won twice on the Korn Ferry Tour last season. He also finished T-3 at the 2015 Barbasol Championship as an amateur, the highest finish by an amateur on the PGA Tour since Phil Mickelson won in 1991.

Kevin Na's Greenbrier title defense got off to a hot start. He fired a 64 to share second place with four others, two back of Shelton.

Notables Sungjae Im (4-under), Bryson DeChambeau (2-under), and Viktor Hovland (2-under) find themselves outside of the top 15 after Day 1.

Marc Leishman withdrew from the Greenbrier with a back injury after shooting 76 in Round 1.

Round 2 begins Friday at 7:15 a.m. ET.
