A birdie-birdie start to Thursday's round at The Open quickly turned bad for David Duval, as the 2001 champion carded a 9-over 14 on the par-5 seventh en route to a 12-over 48 on the front nine.
Duval was originally thought to have scored 13 on the hole but it was corrected to 14 after the round.
After Duval's score was posted at the course, Nick Faldo reported on the Golf Channel broadcast that the former world No. 1 had played the wrong ball on the hole - a move that resulted in a two-stroke penalty. Duval had played multiple provisionals off the tee and thought he was using his third ball for the majority of the hole before realizing that wasn't the case.
Duval, who also made a quadruple-bogey on No. 5, finished with a 20-over-par 91 and sits last in the field.
