After opening with a 3-over 73 in Round 1 of the Travelers Championship, Jordan Spieth came up short Friday in his bid to make the weekend.

The 2017 champion posted a 1-under 69 to finish four shots behind the projected 2-under cutline, and left the TPC River Highlands searching for answers.

"No parts of my game were where I wanted them to be," Spieth said, according to Golf Channel's Nick Menta.

It appeared Spieth had found something with three straight top-10 finishes beginning with the PGA Championship. It was his best stretch of golf in more than a year.

However, those results were a mirage, according to the 25-year-old.

"The results from the other week were strictly really putting," he said. "It was putting and chipping. I still hit the ball below average for the field those weeks, I just made up for it."

Spieth ranked outside the top 120 in both strokes gained: off the tee and approach through two rounds at the Travelers. He knows he needs to clean up those areas moving forward.

"I just really need to improve on my ball striking," he added.

It's unknown at which tournaments Spieth will play prior to the Open Championship. He "may or may not" participate in the John Deere Classic, which is scheduled for the week before the season's final major.
