Mickelson rips USGA: They mess up U.S. Open every time it doesn't rain
Phil Mickelson had some choice words for the organizers of the U.S. Open after his first round of the Memorial Tournament on Thursday.
"I've played, what, 29 U.S. Opens? 100 percent of the time they have messed it up if it doesn't rain," he said, according to Golf Channel's Rex Hoggard. "Rain is the governor. That's the only governor they have. If they don't have a governor, they don't know how to control themselves."
Mickelson is alluding to the various U.S. Open setups that many players have considered unfair over the years.
“It's just based on history. My 30 years, and 30 years before that. I think we're all pulling for a little rain,” he added.
Golf Digest is the reason for the recent USGA discussion, as the publication released a series of anonymous quotes from players voicing their displeasure with golf's governing body earlier in the week. Of course, Mickelson's infamous running-on-the-green antics from Shinnecock Hills last year was used as the header photo.
Earlier in the week, Rory McIlroy said: "If (the USGA) can't redeem themselves at Pebble Beach, then there could be a problem."
With the U.S. Open starting June 13, expect more heated discussions about the USGA over the next two weeks.
