Gary Woodland carded a 5-under 68 in Round 3 of the Tournament of Champions to retain his three-shot lead in Kapalua, HI.

He played the third round with a heavy heart after learning of his grandmother's death Friday night, according to Jason Sobel of the Action Network.

He sits at 17-under through 54 holes and is a combined 12-under on the par 5s at the Plantation Course. His shot of the day came on the par-5 15th when he drained a 63-foot eagle putt to create separation between him and the field.

Woodland is looking to pick up his second title in 11 months. His last win at the 2018 Waste Management Open ended a four-year drought.

Rory McIlroy - who is making his first career start at the Tournament of Champions - carded a 68 of his own on Day 3 to keep pace with Woodland. They will be in the final pairing on Sunday.

Marc Leishman (13-under), Xander Schauffele (12-under), and Bryson DeChambeau (12-under) are all within striking distance of the leaders with 18 holes to left play.
