The previous two winners of the Tournament of Champions got off to hot starts on Thursday, with Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas firing identical 6-under 67 rounds to trail by one shot in Kapalua, HI.

Johnson, the defending champion, and Thomas, the 2017 winner, both finished with a birdie on 18 and carded one bogey in Round 1. Gary Woodland joins the duo at 6-under.

Leading the way after windy first-round play is Kevin Tway, who shot a bogey-free 66 in his debut on the Plantation Course. He qualified for the first event of the calendar year by winning the Safeway Open in October.

Patton Kizzire (4-under) recorded the first hole-in-one on the PGA Tour in 2019 on the par-3 8th. Bryson DeChambeau (4-under) leads the field in strokes gained: putting while utilizing golf's new rules - putting with the pin in.
