Kuchar hangs on at Mayakoba Classic for 1st win since 2014
Matt Kuchar shot a final-round 69 to win the Mayakoba Golf Classic by one shot after entering the day with a four-stroke edge.
The 40-year-old was cruising early Sunday at El Camaleon Golf Club, never showing signs of letting the tournament slip away. However, after a birdie on the par-5 13th, Kuchar carded back-to-back bogeys to drop to 22-under and bring the field back into the mix.
Kuchar would eventually steady the ship and par his final three holes, fending off Danny Lee, who shot a 6-under 65 to finish alone in second.
The 22-under winning score sets a new tournament record for the Mayakoba Golf Classic.
It's Kuchar's eighth career PGA Tour victory and his first since the 2014 RBC Heritage.
J.J. Spaun and Richy Werenski finished in a tie for third at 19-under.
Notables Tony Finau and Rickie Fowler ended up at 14-under, tied for 16th.
