Furyk won't commit to Tiger as Ryder Cup at-large pick

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk isn't ready to hand over an at-large pick to Tiger Woods just yet.

Furyk shared in the golf world's collective amazement on Sunday when Woods shot a dominating 64 in the final round to finish second at the PGA Championship, just two shots back of winner Brooks Koepka.

It was the latest reappearance of vintage Tiger, but Furyk won't let a couple recent performances dictate his final decision.

"I'm not sure the numbers are always that important when I look down the list," Furyk said, according to ESPN.com's Bob Harig. "What is important is how well Tiger has played. Sixth place at The Open Championship, a second place at the PGA. His game - I think the word he used is 'trending.' His game is trending. So it's great to see him playing well.

"For me, the numbers are nice, good to look at, but not always the most important. We want the players who are going to help us be successful."

The U.S. team is looking to capture back-to-back titles for the first time since 1993, following a 17-11 win in 2017.

Meanwhile, though Furyk might be non-committal toward Woods, he's excited about how Tiger is playing recently.

"He's playing very well," Furyk said. "I think there's a lot of folks out there who probably think he can help us. ... I realize Tiger is a story. I realize he's playing very well, and I'm excited to see that."

Furyk makes his first three selections on Sept. 4, and perhaps by then Woods will give him an easier decision.
