After a large number of players returned to Bellerive early on Saturday to finish the second round, a group of big names will be going home before the start of Round 3.

Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Patrick Reed, Henrik Stenson, and Bubba Watson are among the notables to miss the even-par cut at the St. Louis-area track.

Mickelson improved by two shots after an opening-round 73 but it wasn't enough to see the weekend at Bellerive. Mickelson failed to make cut in a major for the first time this year, while this result marks the fourth-straight tournament in which he's failed to post a top-20 finish. With the result, Mickelson won't receive an automatic bid to the United States Ryder Cup team, but it's widely-expected he will be a captain's pick.

Garcia's season-long struggles continued this week, having now missed the cut at all four majors. The Spanish standout has missed seven of his last nine cuts on the PGA Tour and currently sits 131st in the FedEx Cup standings.

Stenson missing the cut alongside Garcia will certainly complicate things for European Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn, as neither player is likely to secure automatic qualification to the team. While both have been strong Ryder Cup players in the past and have each won a major championship, their current form may give Bjorn pause at bringing them to France in September.

But it's not just the European Ryder Cup team that will face some tough decisions, as the difficulty for American captain Jim Furyk to making his four selections only grew after this week.

Bryson DeChambeau needed a strong week to jump into the automatic spots, but the talented 24-year-old missed the cut by one, while other players on the bubble such as Xander Schauffele, Webb Simpson, and Tony Finau will all play the weekend.
