Garrigus leads after weather-delayed Round 1 at Canadian Open

A rain delay wasn't enough to stop Robert Garrigus from holding down the lead after Round 1 at the Canadian Open.

Garrigus carried a one-stroke lead before the inclement conditions forced a suspension of play. He wrapped the opening round at 9-under 63, good for a one-shot lead on Adam Schenk and two over Chris Stroud.

Garrigus' last and only win on the PGA Tour came in 2010. A year ago at the Canadian Open, the Idaho native matched a course record when he shot a 10-under 62 in the third round. He finished second at the Canadian Open in 2012.

"I was in the same exact place (last year) and I ended up finishing fifth and getting my card," Garrigus told Adam Stanley of PGATour.com. "If I keep going like I am, it should be all right.

"I love this place. I've always played well in Canada. There's a lot of good vibes here. The fans are amazing here. They really, really love their Canadian golfers, and they love golf in general. They've always cheered for me, and I kind of feel the vibes. It's pretty cool."

David Hearn, of Brantford, Ont., and Nick Taylor, of Abbotsford, B.C., were the top ranked Canadians after the opening round, both sitting tied for 22nd after a 4-under par showing.

Most impressive of the opening round may have been England's Tommy Fleetwood, who picked up two birdies and two eagles on his last four holes, include a 41-foot putt for eagle on No. 2. He's the first player of the season to notch three eagles in a single round.

The second round of the Canadian Open teed off early Friday.
