Spieth shares Travelers Championship lead, McIlroy 1 shot back
Jordan Spieth and Zach Johnson share a one-shot lead at the Travelers Championship after carding 7-under 63s in Thursday's Round 1.
Spieth's round was highlighted by a bunker shot on the par-5 sixth, which he holed out for eagle.
He also carded six birdies and a lone bogey on the day.
Rory McIlroy, Brian Harman, and Peter Malnati sit one shot back.
McIlroy put on a ball-striking clinic in Round 1, leading the field in strokes gained: tee to green.
Other notables Jason Day and Justin Thomas put themselves in good positions with opening-round 4-under 66s.
U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka got out of the gates hot, birdieing four of his first five holes but struggled on his second nine leading to a 2-under 68.
Patrick Reed is the biggest disappointment so far, shooting a 2-over 72.
The Round 1 scoring average at TPC River Highlands was 69.78, less than a stroke under par.
