Fleetwood ties U.S. Open record with sizzling 63 in final round

Tommy Fleetwood took advantage of much-improved scoring conditions at Shinnecock Hills on Sunday, as the Englishman became the sixth golfer to shoot 63 at the U.S. Open with a round of 7-under-par.

Fleetwood began the day six shots behind the leaders at 9-over but wasted no time in announcing his intentions with four birdies in his first seven holes.

He would continue his assault on the historic course over the back nine, pouring in four straight birdies to walk to the 16th hole at 7-under on the day. The 27-year-old actually gave himself three legitimate chances to break the record with a 62 but missed two putts under 20 feet on the 16th and 17th holes.

Fleetwood saved his best approach for last, slinging a gorgeous draw from 195 yards to 8 feet on the treacherous 18th, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. Unfortunately, his chance at the solo record would just miss on the right side, forcing him to settle with a share of history at 63, the first since Justin Thomas hit that number last year at Erin Hills.

Fleetwood ends his round just one back of leaders Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed and will hope for the wind to blow throughout the afternoon to give him a chance at the title.
