Tiger Woods knew he needed something low on Friday to make the cut at the U.S. Open after beginning with an 8-over-par 78, but the three-time champion was unable to deliver, finishing with a 2-over 72.

That left him at 10-over through 36 holes and, barring a miracle, Woods will be heading home Friday night with his third missed cut in 20 appearances at the U.S. Open.

While Woods felt better about his performance Friday compared to Round 1, he was very honest in his assessment afterward.

"I'm not very happy the way I played and the way I putted," he told reporters, per Dave Shedloski of Golf Digest. "I'm 10-over par. I don't know that you can be too happy and too excited about 10-over par."

Woods came to Shinnecock Hills after a 23rd-place showing at the Memorial a couple weeks ago. The 42-year-old's putter continued to be an issue, but his ball-striking also failed to match the level he's grown accustomed to this season.

The 14-time major champion admitted that without his A-game, it's tough to contend at majors.

"You don't win major championships by kind of slapping all around the place and missing putts," Woods said. "You have to be on. You just can't fake it at a major championship."

Woods' next chance to win major title No. 15 will come at the Open Championship at Carnoustie in July. He's experienced success on that layout in the past, making two starts with a seventh- and a 12th-place finish to show for it.
