Tiger begins U.S. Open with frustrating 8-over 78

After a day of frustration and missed putts, Woods carded an 8-over 78 in Round 1 action of the U.S. Open.
It didn't take long for Shinnecock to welcome Woods to the U.S. Open, as he sailed his approach shot over the first green, then took five additional shots to record an opening-hole triple-bogey.
He went on to miss a 10-foot par putt on No. 2 to quickly fall to 4-over.
After birdieing the par-5 fifth and making five consecutive pars, it seemed as though the 14-time major champ had settled in.
Until he reached the 13th.
Woods left himself a 40-foot birdie putt on the par-4 but took an unthinkable four putts to finish out and walked off the green with a double-bogey.

He also doubled the 14th hole after an errant tee shot ended up in thick fescue.
"Making two doubles and a triple is not very good," Woods told reporters after the round.
No, it's not.
Woods hit nine of 14 fairways but managed only seven greens in regulation.
The 42-year-old sits nine shots behind leaders Dustin Johnson, Ian Poulter, Russell Henley, and Scott Piercy.
Woods will look to battle back inside the cut line when his second round begins Friday at 8:02 a.m. ET.
