Mackenzie Hughes carded a 4-under 66 at the St. Jude Classic Thursday to sit tied for second after an impressive opening round.
Hughes - who qualified for the U.S. Open on Monday - carried his strong play to TPC Southwind, recording five birdies and only a single bogey.
The 27-year-old relied on a strong short game in Round 1, recording two chip-in birdies to gain nearly three strokes around the green for the day.
He also brought a hot flat stick to Memphis, gaining over two strokes putting.
The Canadian ended the day one shot back of leader Seamus Power and tied with notables Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson.
Hughes will look to build off a strong Round 1 when his second round begins at 8:50 a.m. ET.
