The field at the Zurich Classic was considered the strongest ever for the event, but unfortunately, it failed to stay that way heading into the weekend.
Three of the world's elite golfers: Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, and Jon Rahm all missed the cut Friday, diminishing the name power remaining in the field.
The Zurich Classic is an 80-team event, in which the top-35 teams, plus ties, make the cut. The cut was set at 5-under par.
Spieth and teammate Ryan Palmer missed the cut in ugly fashion. In Friday's alternate shot format, they double-bogeyed the final two holes to shoot 74 and miss the cut by one shot. This comes after finishing tied for fourth last season.
Thomas and Bud Cauley dug themselves into a big hole Thursday, as they were one of four teams to shoot in the 70s in the best-ball format. They only made seven birdies in two rounds, also missing the cut by one stroke.
Rahm and Wesley Bryan struggled in alternate shot, carding a 3-over 75 on route to finishing 3-under for the event.
Other notables packing their bags early are world No. 10 Sergio Garcia and U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka.
Round three begins Saturday morning with another round of best-ball scoring.
