3 takeaways from Day 2 of the Tour Championship

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Just two rounds remain in the 2016-17 PGA Tour season, with the 30-player field at East Lake Golf Club contending for the FedEx Cup title and the cool $10-million bonus.

Here are three takeaways from Day 2 in Atlanta.

JT co-leads despite cold putter

Justin Thomas made three birdies, an eagle, and a bogey en route to a 66 Friday to snag a share of the lead at 7-under par. He also moved into the No. 1 position of the projected standings thanks to his spot-on long game through 36 holes at East Lake. The 24-year-old has hit 20-of-28 fairways and 27-of-36 greens in regulation, while averaging an abysmal (minus-1.095) strokes gained putting on the field.

"I just really haven't made anything," Thomas told Steve Sands of the Golf Channel after the round. "I've hit a lot of good putts that have just burned the edge, so hopefully the putter can heat up and see if we can have some fun this weekend."

Jon Rahm is lurking

With most of the attention on Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth, the young Spaniard has cruised under the radar through 36 holes. Rahm is making his Tour Championship debut this week, but has played like a veteran, and is only one shot back of the leaders heading into the weekend. The 22-year-old hasn't been great off the tee thus far, finding just 12-of-28 fairways, but leads the field in greens hit at 80 percent, and is bogey-free in his last 22 holes.

Rickie Fowler's FedEx Cup hopes disappear

Fowler's FedEx Cup hopes all but vanished Friday after he shot a 4-over-par 74. The 28-year-old was ranked No. 6 in the playoff standings coming into the week, with a real chance to win the Tour Championship and the playoffs, but is now playing for pride. Though Fowler's made five birdies in two rounds, he's added eight bogeys and two doubles to sit second-last in the 30-man field, and trails the leaders by 14 strokes.
