Thomas wins FedEx Cup title, Schauffele takes Tour Championship

Butch Dill-USA TODAY Sports

Justin Thomas won the season-long FedEx Cup title Sunday, vaulting over Jordan Spieth in the standings to earn the $10-million playoff bonus.

Thomas fired rounds of 67-66-70-66 at East Lake to finish in second place for the Tour Championship, earning 1200 points for a total of 3000 in the FedEx Cup series, 660 more than Jordan Spieth, who fell to No. 2 in the standings with his T7 result this week.

Meanwhile, Xander Schauffele became the first PGA Tour rookie ever to claim the Tour Championship, making birdie at the 72nd hole to finish at 12-under par for the week, and edge Thomas by one shot. The 23-year-old needed a birdie on the 72nd hole last week at the BMW Championship just to make it into the field at East Lake, and Sunday's win in Atlanta secured PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honors for Schauffele.

"It's been a wild ride," Schauffele told NBC after the win. "I weaseled my way in last week, I've just been kind of weaseling my way around all year. So, to stand here and hold this, it's truly an honor."

Schauffele's victory moved him up 23 spots into the No. 3 ranking, while Dustin Johnson secured the fourth position and Jon Rahm placed fifth in the playoffs.
