Where are all the stars at TPC Sawgrass?

THE PLAYERS Championship brings the toughest field in golf together, and with 48 of the top 50 players in the world in action, it surely takes a special talent to emerge victorious, right?
Through two rounds of action that couldn't be further from the truth, as the leaderboard is woefully short on star power.
The nine players within four shots of the lead have an average world ranking of 122nd, an incredibly underwhelming figure.
Place | Player | Score to par | World Rank |
---|---|---|---|
T1 | Louis Oosthuizen | -9 | 33rd |
T1 | Kyle Stanley | -9 | 176th |
3 | J.B. Holmes | -7 | 44th |
4 | Vijay Singh | -6 | 274th |
T5 | Alex Noren | -5 | 13th |
T5 | David Hearn | -5 | 203rd |
T5 | Rafa Cabrera-Bello | -5 | 35th |
T5 | Patrick Cantlay | -5 | 131st |
T5 | Ian Poulter | -5 | 197th |
The most famous guy on the leaderboard is 54-year-old Vijay Singh, currently ranked 274th in the world. The Fijian used to maintain residence among the top players on the circuit, but hasn't won in nine years and spends most of his time on the Champions Tour.
Alex Noren is the top ranked player on the board at No. 13, but spends the majority of his time in Europe and is largely unknown in North America. Thanks to the enviable ease in which Louis Oosthuizen swings the golf club, the 2010 Open Champion is known in golf circles, but isn't exactly the type of player that has people racing to their television to watch.
Co-leader Kyle Stanley was once a promising young talent who won the 2012 Phoenix Open. He hasn't found the winner's circle since, and spent most of his time during the 2015 season on the Web.com Tour.
Long-hitting J.B. Holmes has played on Ryder Cups and has four PGA Tour wins, but certainly isn't a player that moves the needle for casual fans. The trio of David Hearn, Rafa Cabrera Bello, and Patrick Cantlay sits four shots back, with only the Spaniard having ever won a tournament on either the PGA or European Tour.
Ian Poulter joined the fray at 5-under with a sizzling 67 at the end of the afternoon wave, but he's nowhere near the player that terrorized the American team in Ryder Caps of the past. He was set to lose his PGA Tour status earlier this month before a math error noticed by Brian Gay kept him on the circuit.
So where is all the star power in North Florida? It will be around for weekend play, but is lurking well back of the leaders at 9-under. Of the top 10 players in the world, Jason Day and Henrik Stenson are currently leading the charge at 2-under.
Place | Player | Score to par | World Rank |
---|---|---|---|
T43 | Dustin Johnson | E | 1st |
T43 | Rory McIlroy | E | 2nd |
T20 | Jason Day | -2 | 3rd |
T34 | Hideki Matsuyama | -1 | 4th |
MC | Jordan Spieth | +4 | 5th |
T43 | Sergio Garcia | E | 6th |
T20 | Henrik Stenson | -2 | 7th |
T56 | Justin Rose | +1 | 8th |
T43 | Rickie Fowler | E | 9th |
T43 | Justin Thomas | E | 10th |
With a leaderboard void of the best talent, it's likely the players near the top will come back to the field during the weekend, but with the top golfers in the world so far behind, it may be too much to overcome for a star-filled Sunday at THE PLAYERS.
