Mickelson: Lexi Thompson's controversial penalty should be reversed
The incorrect mark heard round the world has garnered the attention of Phil Mickelson.
On Sunday afternoon, Lexi Thompson was assessed a four-stroke penalty in the final round of the ANA Inspiration - the first major of the LPGA season - after a viewer called in to report Thompson's incorrect marking of a putt during Saturday's round.
Thompson eventually lost in a playoff to So Yeon Ryu, and controversy took the golf world by storm. Mickelson was the latest high-profile golfer to pipe in and maintains the incorrect call was made.
"To have a tournament be decided like that, with all the scenarios going around, as far as viewers calling in, as far as it being a one-foot putt with really no advantage, just a little bit of loose marking, if you will, something that happens all the time, intentionally and unintentionally ... I think it should be reversed. I think she should be given the trophy," Mickelson told ESPN's Bob Harig.
Fellow PGA stars Tiger Woods and Justin Thomas, among many others, have spoken out against the controversial ruling, believing an outsider shouldn't be able to impact the outcome of a tournament.
Mickelson, meanwhile, will kickoff the 25th Masters of his career Thursday at Augusta National.
