PHOTO: Masters pin location sheets as invaluable as clubs

Rob Schumacher-USA TODAY Sports

Aside from their clubs, a golfer's most important pieces of equipment are the yardage book and pin location sheet. Players receive one on the first tee, and it determines how they play each hole.

The hole location is decided by the tee and cup committee, who go hole to hole every morning and decide where the hole should be cut for the day. When selecting the location, the committee factors in slope, weather, and how the ball rolls.

Reading a pin location sheet isn't as hard as it looks. For example, on the first hole, the small number (36) is the green depth, and the pin is 18 paces on. Therefore, there's no change in distance on the approach shot. If the pin was 10 paces on, the shot would be eight yards less.
