McIlroy donates Irish Open winnings to charity

Rory McIlroy's giving back.

The Northern Irishman is donating his winnings from the Irish Open to charity, valued at about $750,000, according to the New York Post. The money will go to the Rory Foundation, which which helps disadvantaged and sick children.

McIlroy used a furious final-round surge to win the tournament he hosts every year for the fist time.

"It means an awful lot," McIlroy said about the victory. "To walk down 18 and look up to the right and see all my friends and family and everyone else that's here supporting me ... I don't usually get emotional winning tournaments. I mean, I'm obviously over the moon and very happy. This tournament to me is one of the most important of my year - not just because it's the Irish Open and it's home, but because of what we're doing charitable-wise as well, the kids we've helped out ... and the money we've raised will go a long way toward making their lives a little bit better."

McIlroy expects the final donation number to exceed €1-million once ticket sales are factored in.
