Michael Phelps apologizes following 2nd DUI arrest
Record-breaking Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps is once again facing charges for driving under the influence following a traffic stop on Monday in Maryland.
Phelps released the following apology on his official Twitter account late Tuesday afternoon:
(1/3) Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines.
— Michael Phelps (@MichaelPhelps) September 30, 2014
(2/3) I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility.

(3/3) I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down.

Police pulled Phelps over after clocking his Land Rover driving 84 mph in a 45-mph zone. The 18-time Olympic gold medallist was cooperative but "was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests," police said in a statement.
Phelps doesn't have any more meets scheduled this year, so it's unclear what further steps will be taken, according to USA Today.
"The news regarding Michael Phelps and his actions are disappointing and unquestionably serious," U.S.A. Swimming said in a statement. "We expect our athletes to conduct themselves responsibly in and out of the pool."
This isn't Phelps' first run-in with the law. The swimmer was also arrested for DUI in 2004 and pled guilty to driving while impaired. He received a sentence of 18 months probation.
He now faces charges of DUI, excessive speed, and crossing double lane lines.
