Katzberg gets Canada's 1st-ever hammer throw gold

Ethan Katzberg won gold in the men's hammer throw, becoming the first Canadian and the youngest hammer thrower ever to stand atop the Olympic podium.

Katzberg, who qualified with 79.93 meters, threw an impressive 84.12 meters on his first attempt, more than four meters ahead of Hungary's Bence Halasz, the second-place finisher. Katzberg is the first Canadian to win a medal in hammer throw since Duncan Gillis won silver at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Fellow Canadian Rowan Hamilton finished ninth.

Katzberg is the reigning world champion and the youngest world champion ever, winning the event at 21. The 22-year-old set the ninth-furthest distance ever in April with 84.38 meters.

Katzberg and Hamilton are the first Canadian men hammer throwers to compete at the Olympics since the 2008 Beijing Games. Fellow Canadian Camryn Rogers qualified first overall in the women’s hammer throw and looks to make it a double-gold in the women's finals Tuesday.
