Dressel breaks Phelps' world record in 100m butterfly

Caeleb Dressel broke Michael Phelps' long-standing world record in the 100m butterfly on Friday, besting his legendary countrymen's mark by 0.32 seconds with a time of 49.50 seconds, according to the BBC.

In breaking the record in his semifinal heat, the 22-year-old qualified for the final at the 2019 FINA World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.

Phelps set the previous world record of 49.82 at the 2009 edition of the World Championship in Rome, Italy.

As a 19-year-old, Dressel competed with and alongside Phelps at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, capturing a pair of gold medals for Team USA in the 100m freestyle relay and 100m medley relay.

Phelps saw his world record in the 200m butterfly fall earlier this week. Hungary's Kristof Milak smashed the previous best with a time of 1:50.73 on Wednesday.
